Getting Started with Trézor

Your gateway to secure cryptocurrency storage. Set up your device in minutes and protect your digital assets with industry-leading security.

What is Trézor?

Trézor is the world's most trusted hardware wallet for cryptocurrency. It's a physical device that stores your private keys offline, protecting them from hackers, malware, and online threats. With Trézor, you maintain complete control over your digital assets.

Unlike software wallets or exchanges, Trézor ensures that your private keys never leave the device. Every transaction requires physical confirmation on the device itself, providing an additional layer of security that software solutions simply cannot match.

Key Features

  • ✓ Offline storage (cold wallet)
  • ✓ Physical transaction confirmation
  • ✓ Supports 1000+ cryptocurrencies
  • ✓ PIN protection & recovery seed
  • ✓ Open-source firmware
  • ✓ Regular security updates

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

1

Unbox Your Trézor Device

Carefully open your Trézor package and verify that all contents are present: the Trézor device, USB cable, recovery seed cards, and getting started guide. Check for any signs of tampering – the package should have security seals intact.

Important: Only purchase Trézor devices from official sources. Never buy from unauthorized resellers or second-hand marketplaces, as compromised devices could put your assets at risk.

2

Connect to Your Computer

Using the provided USB cable, connect your Trézor device to your computer. Visit Trézor.io/start in your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Brave recommended). The website will automatically detect your device and guide you through the installation process.

You may need to install Trézor Bridge, a communication tool that allows your browser to interact with the device. This is a one-time installation that takes just a few minutes.

3

Install Trézor Suite

Trézor Suite is your all-in-one application for managing your cryptocurrencies. Download and install it from the official website. Trézor Suite is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, as well as a web version that runs directly in your browser.

The application provides a clean, intuitive interface for sending and receiving crypto, checking balances, and managing multiple accounts. It also includes built-in exchange features and portfolio tracking.

4

Create Your Wallet

Choose "Create new wallet" when prompted. Your Trézor will generate a unique recovery seed – a list of 12 or 24 words that serves as the master key to your wallet. Write these words down on the provided recovery seed cards in the exact order shown.

CRITICAL: Never take a photo of your seed or store it digitally. Anyone with access to your recovery seed can access your funds. Store the physical cards in a secure location, preferably in multiple secure places.

5

Set Up Your PIN

Create a strong PIN code (4-9 digits) to protect your device from unauthorized access. The PIN entry uses a unique blind matrix system – the numbers appear in random positions on your computer screen, but you enter them on the device, protecting against keyloggers.

Choose a PIN that's memorable but not easily guessable. Avoid simple patterns like "1234" or repeated digits. You'll need to enter this PIN each time you use your Trézor.

6

Verify Your Recovery Seed

Trézor will ask you to verify your recovery seed by selecting specific words from your list. This ensures you've written down the seed correctly. Do not skip this step – it's your safety net if you ever need to recover your wallet.

After verification, your Trézor is ready to use! You can now receive cryptocurrencies by sharing your wallet addresses and send funds by confirming transactions on the device.

Security Best Practices

🔒 Recovery Seed Protection

Your 12-24 word recovery seed is the most important element of your security. Never share it with anyone, including Trézor support staff. Store it offline in a secure location.

Consider using metal backup solutions for fire and water resistance. Split storage across multiple secure locations can provide additional protection against loss or theft.

💻 Computer Security

Always use Trézor on a secure computer. Keep your operating system and antivirus software up to date. Be cautious of phishing websites that mimic the official Trézor site.

Bookmark the official Trézor.io website and always verify the URL before entering any information. Enable two-factor authentication on all associated accounts.

📱 Phishing Protection

Trézor will never ask for your recovery seed via email, phone, or any other method. Be extremely suspicious of any communication requesting this information.

Always verify addresses on your Trézor device screen before confirming transactions. Malware can manipulate addresses displayed on your computer.

🔄 Firmware Updates

Regularly update your Trézor firmware to benefit from the latest security patches and features. Updates are authenticated and can only be installed from official sources.

Trézor Suite will notify you when updates are available. The update process is straightforward and your recovery seed remains secure throughout.

Common Issues & Solutions

Device Not Detected

If your computer doesn't recognize your Trézor, try using a different USB port or cable. Ensure Trézor Bridge is properly installed. On Linux, you may need to configure USB permissions. Restart your browser and try again. If issues persist, try a different computer to isolate the problem.

Forgot PIN

After multiple incorrect PIN attempts, your Trézor will wipe itself for security. Don't panic – your funds are safe! Use your recovery seed to restore your wallet on the same or a new device. This is why keeping your recovery seed secure and accessible is crucial.

Lost or Damaged Device

If your Trézor is lost, stolen, or damaged, your funds remain secure as long as you have your recovery seed. Purchase a new Trézor device, select "Recover wallet," and enter your recovery seed. You'll regain full access to all your accounts and funds. Transfer your assets to a new wallet with a new seed as soon as possible.

Transaction Issues

If transactions fail or take too long, check network fees and congestion. Some networks require higher fees during busy periods. Always verify the recipient address on your device screen. For stuck transactions, you may be able to use RBF (Replace-By-Fee) or CPFP (Child-Pays-For-Parent) to speed them up.

Advanced Features

Passphrase Protection

Add an extra layer of security with an optional passphrase (25th word). This creates a hidden wallet that can only be accessed with both your recovery seed and passphrase. Perfect for plausible deniability – you can have a decoy wallet with small amounts and a hidden wallet with your main holdings.

Shamir Backup

Split your recovery seed into multiple shares using Shamir's Secret Sharing. You can set it up so that you need, for example, 3 out of 5 shares to recover your wallet. This provides redundancy – if you lose one or two shares, you can still recover your wallet, but no single share can be used alone to access your funds.

Multi-Account Management

Create multiple accounts for different purposes – one for savings, one for daily transactions, one for business, etc. Each account has its own addresses but all are protected by the same device and recovery seed. Easily organize and track your cryptocurrency portfolio.

Coin Control

Advanced users can manually select which UTXOs (Unspent Transaction Outputs) to use in transactions. This feature is useful for privacy management, avoiding dust attacks, and optimizing transaction fees. Perfect for users who want granular control over their Bitcoin transactions.
